TOBI Lab Tsuzuri Project Meeting

Between the Foundation Courses held every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), there is a seminar day (called “TOBI Lab”) to create gently stimulating activities. The TOBI Lab offered on Saturday, May 19th was a meeting to consider the “Tsuzuri Project” with curator Ms. Sawako Inaniwa as a leader. This is a project featuring high-definition copies of 2 pairs of 6 panel byōbu (Japanese folding screens) that are scheduled to be donated by Canon. Despite being reproductions, these pieces were made with Canon’s exhaustive technology, and real gold leaf is used. They are precious reference materials which cost about 20,000,000 yen per pair to produce. Currently, the TOBIRA candidates are putting their heads together to decide what to do with these Japanese folding screens in the Tsuzuri Project. Unlike the original pieces, there is no need to store them in a glass case for viewing, so even people with weak vision can see the pieces up close. Also, it is possible to get the feel of how the Japanese folding screens would have been used in a regular daily living environment – such as seeing them in candlelight, rather than in an exhibition room. The “Tsuzuri Project” will be interesting. (Itō)
